The Unionville stop has served many purposes over the years. Some teams use it to improve upon a poor tournament result, some teams use it to qualify for the Provincials (late bloomers) and some teams use it as a means to get away from the wife/husband and kids to enjoy a weekend of wholesome touch football. 50 Men's and women's teams, across 7 divisions of play, competed for cash prizes and Trillium points in Unionville. Tournament Chair Steve Morrell shared a few words with us regarding this popular stop;
Unionville is the final stop for the Trillium Tour each year and each year we witness some of the season's best football as teams prepare for the Provincials and jockey for their final rankings. This years Tourney was no different as the Spartans win gave them first place in the Men's "AA" and the Shock's win gave them first place in the Women's "A" Division.

Thanks Steve, and thank you to the rest of the organizing committee for making the Unionville stop such a great one! As a referee for this event I would also like to thank Doug Richardson for doing such a fantastic job of seeing to it that our officials were well taken care of. SPARTANS TAKE TOP SPOT What difference a year makes. Last year at this time, the Spartans were licking their wounds as they sat in seventh place in standings. Though they eventually did what they usually do, produce at the end of the year, 2002 wasn't a Spartan-like season. 2003 has been a different story for this bunch. Recruiting some speed and youth to compliment their wily veterans, The Spartans were a revitalized crew heading into this years campaign. Though their early bird performance wasn't quite what they expected, it proved to be a great practice ground as they would go on to make a championship game appearance in each of their next three tournaments, winning two of them and handing last years undefeated Champions, The Ottawa Nepean Canadians, three losses in the process. Though their long time team manager, Dave Thompson, would say that he always looks at the tour as practice for the Nationals, he must be somewhat pleased with his team's performance thus far in 2003. Congratulations on finishing first gentlemen and good luck at the Provincials!!
SHOCKING RISE TO THE TOP With their nice blend of speed, talent and determination, the feisty ladies from Toronto have risen to the very top of the women's standings to head into the Provincial Championships with the coveted number one seed. Capturing their second title of 2003 in Unionville, the Dawk-led Shock have some serious momentum going into the labor day classic. I look forward to seeing more of this exciting bunch as they tackle all of the top women's teams next month. Good luck to you and congratulations on your very successful campaign thus far!!
STORMING UP THE RANKS Starting 2003 in the lower ranks, the Cyclones have stormed up the ranks, peaking in Unionville as the walked away with the "A" Championship. With some veteran leadership combined with exceptional talent, the Cyclones have turned eyes their way. Knocking off the Gaels, Red Eyes and Bulls, to name a few, Unionville can be called the breakthrough tournament for this bunch. Though they weren't able to creep into the tier one ranks for the Provincials, anyone thinking that this team won't a force there next season hasn't been paying attention. Watch for the Green and Grey athletes to continue making a name for themselves as the 2003 season carries on… |
