Three teams headed into the Unionville tour stop with an opportunity to walk out with the number one rank for the Provincials. While the Canadians, Piranhas and Spartans were amongst these three teams, there were nine others using the Toronto outskirt stop to battle for a desired final rank A couple points of interest for this tier would have to be the Spartans handing The Canadians their 3rd loss (they also handed them their first two) of the tour and the Mustangs shaking the Monster and Piranha monkeys that have been carrying on their backs for seemingly ever. The Magellan Mustangs may have shaken a couple of monkeys this weekend, but to their dismay, they weren't able to shake their biggest, that being the Burlington Spartans. These two teams went head to head in the finals of the Unionville stop. Though this was the first final game appearance of 2003 for the Mustangs, the novelty quickly wore off as the Spartans took early control of the game. With the Spartans making key plays at key moments, they were able to halt any Mustang effort at a comeback, earning them their second title of 2003 as well as the top spot of tier one heading into the Provincials. Spartan GM Dave Thompson shared a few words with us regarding his teams Unionville success;
Hi Gordie: Going into the tournament, we knew that a win would secure 1st place in a tight 3-way race with the Piranhnas and the Canadians...so we were very happy to win and secure the top seed. It has been a long time since we have been #1 going into the Ontarios, and we hope to continue with our strong play. At Unionville, we played well on Sunday, first overcoming the Blue Devils [unfortunately QB Don Gerry was hurt for them], the Canadians, and finally the [speedier] Mustangs in the final. Our defense was strong throughout the tournament, and came up with key stops when we needed them. Our improved team speed on offense really showed and helped Rob to move the ball and finish drives consistently. Having speed can make play calling a lot easier. We expect the Ontarios to be wide open at the Elite level with 5-6 teams having a realistic shot to go all the way. With the event being played over 3 days, fatigue should be less of a factor. Good luck to all teams entered in the Ontarios! Regards, Dave
Thanks Dave and congratulations to you and to your teammates! I'd also like to congratulate the rest of the tier one teams on yet another fantastic season of Trillium football. See you all in September!!
