Having to play the same team twice in
a tournament is not usually ideal. Following our poor performances during
our round robin games, getting another crack at both teams that fed
us our lunches was quite welcome. After dispatching the Most Wanted,
our sights were set on Alpha Omega. This was the group of speedsters
that gave us a 33 to 6 beating.
With our confidence boiling over and
our incredible momentum thrusting us towards victory, things were looking
good for our squad. We would face Alpha Omega in the Championship game
and amend the previous day’s outcome. Although Alpha Omega was
filled with game breaking athletes, their short bench, coupled with
our exceptional play made this contest a long one for them.
Our offense continued its domination,
marching the ball with authority. Tony Stewart lit up the board with
his spectacular touchdowns, and Paul Shorten offered an unforgettable
backwards score, a little payback for theirs on us the previous day.
Our defense would also continue its stellar
play. Wayne Mckoy sustained his brilliant performance, snagging five
interceptions that game, yes FIVE inceptions. Wayne was an impassable
force out there.
With the mercy rule in effect,
and our team up 33 to 19 in the fourth quarter, the referee blew his
whistle and we were crowned the Ft Lauderdale World Cup Qualifier Champions.
Although every player and
coach on this team contributed to our success, two players deserve to
be placed above the others. Rod Moors and Wayne Mckoy took their games
to a special level, playing the largest roles that weekend. You both
should be very proud of what you brought to the table.
This tournament has to be
ranked as one of my most memorable football memories. Having played
against so many of these great athletes, for so many years, and now
getting the chance to play with them has truly been fantastic. Spending
a few days laughing my stomach into knots made it ever more worthwhile.
I can't wait to do it all over again in Orlando!
