The Hamilton Piranhas finished the season as the clear number one team in Ontario, compiling five consecutive titles on the Trillium Tour, with three of them at the elite level. Not only did they enter the Trillium Cup at the best team in the Province, they were the defending elite champions.

The Piranhas were in a round-robin pool that produced three tournament champions. As a result,  many considered this as one of the most competitive pools. The Piranhas perfect 3 and 0 record and points for and against total of 90 to 12, however, says otherwise.

Quarter and semi-final play-offs would offer just as little in the competitive department. In fact, the Piranhas would not face a true test until the championship game, where they met the second place seed and perennial contenders, the Kitchener Gaels.

Opting for a 72 minute affair, the Piranhas and Gaels entertained spectators with a lengthy competitive contest. While the Piranhas finished the game with a two score lead, nothing was decided until the last few minutes. Both teams turned the ball over several times, having the game witness a slew of momentum changes, but the Piranhas were able to defend their title in the end and complete their season as the undisputed number one team in Ontario.

Congratulations on your amazing season guys!

The Ottawa Capitals have played the most inconsistent season of their three year history. They kicked off their 2008 campaign with much promise at the Hamilton Bowl, dropping a last minute AA heartbreaking decision in the semi-finals. Since then, things would go downhill, uphill, downhill and uphill again.

The Capitals would close out their Trillium Tour on one of the “uphill” notes, capturing the A Provincial title. They held off the Lightning in the semi's, before catching their rival Tailgators in an off-game to not only earn the title, but jump to the fourth spot in the Province, congratulations guys!

The Mississauga Rebels were in a difficult pool. Two pool-opponents would finish their tournament as Ontario champions in the top two divisions. Disappointing round-robin results had the Rebels competing for the BB end of things. Normally this division would offer slightly lower ranked teams, but with the Toronto Trojans and ONC Hellcats  upset in their round-robin, the Rebels were going to have to bring more than their “A” game to win this tournament.

As fate would have it, the Trojans and Hellcats would have to face each other in the quarter-finals, giving the Rebels a potential easier path to the championship game.

The Toronto X-Men and Toronto Gators stood in the Rebels path. With both of those teams knocking off elite ranked  teams earlier this season, nothing was going to be easy for the Rebels, as they would have to defeat both squads in quarter and semi-final action.

The Rebels defense rose to the occasion, however, as they would hold the X-men to a single score, and shut out the Gators to advance to the finals.

The Trojans rebounded nicely from their round-robin disappointment. They sent the Hellcats packing early, before controlling the Hogs to face the Rebels in the finals. The Trojans were one of the surging teams of the Tour this season. As has been documented, they turned a season of injury plagued disasters in 2007, to a series of envious achievements in 2008. They were without question the favoured team in this contest.

The Rebels would ignore the spread and produce their best game of the season. In an extremely hard fought decision, the Rebels would defeat  the Trojans 20 to 21 to capture the BB title. Congratulations on your excellent result Rebels!

After they captured the BB title at the Early Bird, the Kitchener Vipers practically vanished from the scene. They’d make a triumphant return to the limelight at the Trillium Cup.

After a slow start in round-robin play, play-offs saw the Vipers string three impressive victories together, including a hard fought 22 to 20 decision over the high scoring Souther Ontario Cobras in the finals.

Congratulations on your Provincial title gentlemen!

The defending Ontario and Canadian champion Ottawa Devils were in fine form at the Trillium Cup. Other than a contested battle with the Rebels the Devils breezed through round-robin match ups.

The Toronto Rockets would also test the Devils in preliminary action. Escaping with an 18 to 6 victory, the Devils advanced to the semi-finals where they made quick work of the Toronto Ravens.

Not coincidentally, the Devils would face their toughest challenge in the championship game, where once again they faced the Toronto Rebels. The Rebels are the only team to hand the Devils a loss this past season, a semi-final defeat back in June at the Kingston stop.

While the Devils already avenged that loss, it made their Provincial final the most intriguing of possible match ups.

The Rebels kept this battle close to the very end, but the Devils, lead by their ultra-illusive quarterback and stellar defense, would prove to be too much. The Devils successfully defended their title as Trillium Cup champions and their ranking as the best team in Ontario women’s football. Congratulations ladies!

Fresh off their Unionville championship over the acclaimed Toronto Rockets, Toronto’s Landell Lightning entered the Trillium Cup with tons of confidence. In fact, they’d use that confidence to defeat the Rockets yet again in round-robin play. Unfortunately it was their only victory in three contests.

After a one-sided loss in preliminary action, Landell would once again find their stride. They nearly doubled the dangerous Wildcats in the A semi-finals, advancing to face the Rockets for the third time in two tournaments.

While Landell defeated the Rockets consecutively, a mere 4 points separated those victories. As expected, the Lightning and Rockets played to another extremely close contest, with only 2 points deciding the victor.

Landell would once again emerge victorious to earn the Trillium Cup and their third title of the season. Congratulations ladies!

The Toronto Venom in its second season have achieved moderate success, going undefeated in their league. On the Trillium Tour, while their ranking has increased, Sunday morning playoff success eluded them until Unionville which was a turning point for this competitive group of women.

In Unionville, they won the BB championship over the Lady Raiders 7-0, but they never lost sight of the fact that the Scarborough Raiders played them without their starting QB.

In a strange twist of fate, The Toronto Venom found the Raiders in their pool for the Trillium Cup draw, and lost 26-0. It was their final round robin game the Sunday morning, a sobering experience.

The Venom managed to rebound from a difficult loss to get to the BB finals where they would once again face the Scarborough Raiders, who remained undefeated throughout the tournament.

With steely determination, and a great team effort, they shut out the Lady Raiders with an 18-0 victory, to capture the Trillium Cup, congratualtions ladies!

The reformed Ottawa Fury kicked off their season with the BB title at the Early Bird. Despite their strong start, the Fury wouldn’t make another championship appearance until the Trillium Cup. There they squared off against their hometown rivals, the Inferno.

As expected, a close battle ensued, but the favoured Fury pulled out the win to cap their 2008 season with a second title and a Provincial championship.

Congratualtions on your competitive campaign!

The Ottawa Spartans produced a career best Provincial result. While Trillium Tour and Trillium Cup championships are nothing new to this competitive Ottawa squad, their flawless result at the this years Provincials has to be considered a team best.

The Spartans walked away a perfect 6 and 0, earning notorious victories over veteran rivals Ottawa Storm, and the number one ranked Scarborough Raiders in the finals.

Congratulations on another fantastic campaign guys, and its awesome conclusion!
