Leveling The Playing
Field
It has been some time since
a team other then the Spartans, Canadians and or Piranhas have hoisted
an Elite title. Though the Canadians did make yet another Championship
game appearance, it wasn’t against the Spartans or Piranhas. It
was against their bitter rivals, Ottawa’s Magellan Mustangs. The
Canadians have dominated their Mustang match ups since these two teams
split in half. Not to long ago, the Mustangs and Canadians were one
team under the helm of (now Stang QB) John Davidson. After their split
those few years ago, games between these two teams have been quite intense,
to say the least. Though they’ve played to many close results,
The Canadians have dominated the Stangs in the win department, never
losing in a final game. Well, finally, when it counted, J.D., and his
improved Mustangs, would defeat their nemesis. Down 7 points, with one
play remaining, and the Mustangs within striking distance, J.D. threw
up a prayer and Chris Evraire answered it. Making a spectacular adjustment
on Canadian and Team Canada defensive back, Dan Berrea, Chris gave his
team a crack at winning the title at the convert stage. Going for two,
for the win, and like it was meant to be, J.D. threw a more convincing
pass to his long time loyal teammate, Serge Brunet, in the back of the
end zone. Landing perfectly in font in his hands, all Serge could do
was let in fall in his mitts and keep his feet in bounds. He would do
both, and the Mustangs would capture their first ever title on the trillium
tour. Most importantly though, they would defeat their archrivals when
it mattered most. Congratulations gentlemen!
It should be noted that my Almonte Hellcats
would make their first ever appearance in a semi final game. Rebounding
from an ugly Saturday performance, we would defeat the mighty Spartans
in the quarterfinals (sudden death converts). Defeating a team of the
class and stature of the Spartans is always a cherished moment, for
any team, but especially ours. It’s always an honour to square
off against your classy squad fellas! I'm sure you'll be looking forward
to the next one, as will we:)
