With Landell and The Blue Devils dropping down, and with the up surging Hellcats and Red Eyes knocking on the tier one door, competition in tier two was at its best in Kingston.

The Blue Devils and Red Eyes continued their "Smash Mouth" rivalry in the quarters. The boys in blue came out on the top end of a close 30 to 22 affair. The local town Kingston Frog's, who also dropped down from the top tier, sent The Ottawa Seminoles packing with a convincing 28 to 14 victory. Toronto's Landell Jets squared off against the new and improved, Ottawa GT Vikings. Though the game was close through the first half, Landell pulled away in the second, defeating the Vikings 42 to18. Our last quarter finals saw the Hellcats from Almonte hand the Ravens of Burlington, a 33 to 6 defeat.

In our first semi final match up, Almonte and the Blue Devils squared off. Though both teams have had close match ups in the past, Almonte was the better team on this morning, as they defeated the Blue Devils, 33 to 16. Our other semi final saw The Jets and Frogs take to the pitch. Landell scored only 23 points in this one, but with their defense allowing only 8, Landell moved on to the finals.

When a team drops down a division, they like to think that their opponents will be easier ones. Though this is usually the case, there are times, however, when a team is better then their seeding. This is definitely a boat that Almonte fits into. Two years ago, The Hellcats were on the verge of barging through the tier one door. When their quarterback, Steve Dalgity, had to undergo back surgery that off season, The Hellcats were left scrambling through 2002 with a back up pivot. This not only took its toll on the moral of the team, it took its toll of their ranking. After a busy off season of recruitment and with the return of their QB, Almonte rolled into 2003 with confidence.

Landell and Almonte (a game that I had the pleasure of the seeing from start to finish), went at it in the finals. And "went at it" they did. This game had it all, long drives, big plays and controversial calls. With the Hellcats leading Landell 26 to 25, with only seconds to play, Landell QB (despite appearing to be sacked, though it should be noted that head Reff John Hebert was overworked this day, lack of officials) pulled out a miracle 50 yard touchdown pass to the great Paul Shorten to win the game. Though Almonte was a little disheartened by the controversy, they can pleased to know that it's only a matter of time, possibly in Ottawa, that they'll find themselves amongst the TFO elite. Congratulations to the Landell Jets for pulling up their socks after their dismal Saturday performance. It's tough to play up to your potential after you're dropped to a lower division.
