This past off season saw
some interesting developments for our top tier. With the Playground
Legends folding their tent, and their players dispersing to various
teams, Ottawa became a stronger football force heading into 2004. Ottawa
wasn’t the only football area strengthening their rosters. The
Spartans, Piranhas and Trojans (GTA), to name a few, added some notable
athletes to their squads. Like any off season, player movement is nothing
new, and 2004 was no different. Let’s see how the improved teams
measured in the “Early Bird” chapter of our prestigious
Trillium Tour…
Quarter Finals- Spartans
28 vs Hornets 14
Quarter Finals- Trojans
1 vs Piranhas 0
Quarter Finals- Canadians
24 vs Hellcats 1
Quarter Finals- Jets 18
vs Red Eyes 6
Semi Finals- Spartans 20
vs Jets 15
Semi Finals- Canadians 23
vs Trojans 12
Finals- Canadians 22
vs Spartans 15
It didn't take long for
two things to happen in this tournament. Firstly, Don Gerry, former
pivot of the infamous "Blue Devils", met his old squad (now
the Hornets) along side his Spartan teammates in the quarter finals.
With Rob Houston (Spartan's starting qb) taking much of the tournament
off, "Big Bad Don Gerry" showed his old teammates that his
arm still has much mileage in it. The second thing to happen, which
had none of the spectating crowd surprised, was the continuation of
the Canadian/Spartan rivalry. Both teams battled in the championship
game, with the Canadians emerging victorious in this one, 22 to15. Something
tells me that this won’t be the last championship game meeting
for these two outstanding teams.
