The Ottawa Capitals continued their offensive struggles in Unionville. With their quarterback making only his second appearance on the Tour after an eight-month injury-induced lay off, the obvious rust has hampered what was one of the highest scoring teams last season. The Capital defensive unit proved to be as solid as ever, however, keeping most contests within reach.
After a poor round robin showing, the Capitals found their groove on both sides of the ball and eventually captured their first title of the season. Let’s take a look at the rest of the action that comprised the always interesting A division.
Quarter-Finals
Ottawa Capitals 19 vs Mississauga Enforcers 14
Hamilton Irish 28 vs Toronto Trojans 8
Burlington Spartans 31 vs Hamilton Hogs 30
Mississauga Rebels 18 vs Landell Lightning 6
Semi-Finals
Ottawa Capitals 35 vs Mississauga Rebels 18
Hamilton Irish 33 vs Burlington Spartans 8
The Capitals travelled to Unionville with a short bench, which became shorter after several injuries. The Hamilton Irish, who began the final Tour stop with strong numbers, were even worse off as they competed with only eight bodies throughout Sunday play-offs. This made their dispatching of the Trojans and Spartans in back to back contests an even greater feat.
The Capitals pulled off a couple of gratifying Sunday victories themselves. Their first victory was over the surging Mississauga Enforcers (2nd in their elite pool), followed by the Mississauga Rebels (defeated Landell). While both matches were contested, the Enforcers were only a third down conversion away from possibly taking the lead and sending the Capitals packing.
The Irish and Capitals title match up proved to be a battle of the battered, with the eight-strong Irish the worse of the two. While both teams displayed their fatigue, with neither offense scoring in the first quarter, the Capitals eventually found the end zone enough times to walk/limp away with the victory. Congratulations to both teams for digging deep to put on an entertaining contest for the beer tent plenty.
