The Unionville Invitational marks the end of the 2007 Trillium Tour. While plenty of teams have made names for themselves this season, no one has made a bigger statement than the Kitchener Gaels. After a slow start at the Early Bird, the Gaels would go on to capture three titles, two at the elite level, in their next four Trillium Tour stops. On top of these impressive performances, with the aid of their Unionville elite championship, the Gaels would cap off their season by taking top spot in the Province.
Let’s see who the Gales had to face beginning with the quarterfinals.
Quarter-Finals
Ottawa Nepean Canadians 29 vs Mississauga Enforcers 29
Ottawa ACC Argos 38 vs Hamilton Irish 22
Kitchener Gaels 37 vs Hamilton Hogs 36
Burlington Piranhas 29 vs Toronto Landell Lightning 14
The final four at Unionville featured two closely contested battles. The first one we’ll look at included the Canadians and Piranhas. The Piranhas welcomed ONC to the 2007 Tour in Kingston, with a one sided semi-final result. While the Piranhas were again victorious in Unionville, this match up was anything but one sided. It turned out to be another classic battle for the books between these two great teams.
The Gaels and Argos faced off in our other semi-final contest, which proved to be even closer then the aforementioned one. In fact, the Argos, the highest scoring team on the Tour, were only a dropped td pass away from advancing to the finals, clearly displaying the parity that defines Touch Football Ontario these days.
Semi-Finals
Burlington Piranhas 20 vs Ottawa Nepean Canadians 15
Kitchener Gaels 22 vs Ottawa ACC Argos 20
After squeaking past the Argos, the Gaels stepped up their play for the finals. Not leaving the decision in the hands of their defense, or luck, the Gaels would more then double the Piranhas to earn a decisive 31 to 14 decision, capture the Unionville elite, and, most notably, take first place in the Province. Congratulations Gaels!
