The Burlington Spartans, after splitting their round-robin matches, would post three consecutive play-off victories to capture their first elite title of the season. Each of their play-off contests wouldn’t be decided until the very last minute of play, with one of them requiring over-time minutes. The Kingston stop tested the bench-depth of the Spartans, which they passed with flying colours. Let’s see who the Burlington boys had to face, beginning with the quarter-finals:

Quarter-finals

Ottawa Nepean Canadians 29 vs Hamilton Irish 12

Burlington Spartans 28 vs Ottawa Hellcats 27

Kitchener Gaels 29 vs Ottawa Capitals 20

Hamilton Piranhas 28 vs Montreal Maroons 6

The Piranhas had a rough start to the Hamilton Bowl, as they had to adjust to a fairly revamped roster. Struggling through round-robin action, the Piranhas would eventually find their groove, putting together a series of victories to take the “A’ title. Despite splitting their Kingston pool match-ups, the Piranhas would dominate the Early Bird elite finalists, Montreal Maroons, in quarter-final action to advance to the semi-finals.

Semi-Finals

Hamilton Piranhas 34 vs Ottawa Nepean Canadians 14

Burlington Spartans 20 vs Kitchener Gaels 14

Like last season, the Ottawa Nepean Canadians made their Trillium debut at the Kingston stop. Also like season, however, the Canadians early season rust wouldn’t allow them to advance further than the semi-finals, (like that's a bad thing) losing a one sided decision to the Piranhas.

Our other semi-final match up saw a rematch from the Hamilton Bowl elite finals, where the Gaels defeated the Spartans to capture their first “AA” title. The Gaels almost defeated the Spartans again, but a heartbreaking touchdown-tying pass was dropped during the very last play of the game, preventing that opportunity. The Gaels continue to impress!

Old rivals, the Spartans and Piranhas, took the field for another classic championship match up, in an aggressive battle that was so close it took overtime to decide the outcome. As mentioned earlier, the Spartans emerged victorious, but the Piranhas made them earn their title. Congratulations to both teams for putting on such an excellent elite performance!
